F-150 drivers frequently experience malfunctions with the roof, and the forums are filled with people who can’t figure out why the sunroof is giving them a hard time. Some people can’t close the roof down, and some even check the fuzes and look for the problem but can’t figure out why the roof is not working properly.

This truck is a powerful vehicle, but its modern features oftentimes break. One common problem is the sunroof getting stuck in tilt position. This is quite a big deal and makes driving in the rain a nightmare.

On Ford F-150s, an overhead console basically has full control over the roof. There are many buttons, and sometimes, we get carried away and start experimenting. The tilt button shouldn’t give you a hard time, but many drivers have experienced problems and the sunroof can’t return from a tilt position.

If you have this problem, here are five things you can do to fix the sunroof and get it back to its normal position:

  • Push the button for the side mirror while simultaneously holding the sunroof tilt-down button
  • Pull the fuse for the sunroof and manually crank it closed
  • Disconnect the battery and reset the windows
  • Use your key
  • Replace the track/rail assembly

The Possible Solutions Explained

Push the button for the side mirror while simultaneously holding the sunroof tilt-down button

Hold the tilt-down button if you need to close the sunroof while bringing the side mirrors in and out. The roof will slide back and get right back into place.

In all fairness, this method will get the roof down but may not fix your problem permanently.

Pull the fuse for the sunroof and manually crank it closed

Everything is connected when it comes to cars and accessories, and sometimes you may find the solution by experimenting with other parts of the interior. You need the manual case to pull the fuse from the sunroof and crank it manually. If you are the car’s first owner, you should find it in the glove compartment.

Disconnect the battery and reset the windows

You will reset the windows and probably everything else by disconnecting the battery. After disconnecting, wait a few minutes and do a 10-second reset on the sunroof. It may sound simple, but some drivers have easily fixed the problem this way.

Use your key

While standing next to the driver’s side door, open the windows and hold the lock until they close. The sunroof may also reset with the windows and get out of the tilt position.

Replace the track/rail assembly

Replacing the track and rail assembly has the biggest chance of resolving your stuck sunroof problem. In the process, you have to be careful.

First, find the correct track/rail assembly for your F-150 here. Once in hand, follow these steps:

Remove the 4 Torx screws and hold the glass to the tracks. While you are inside the truck, look at the glass panel. Remove the four screws carefully, lift the glass and store it in a safe place.

The pivot brackets should be loose from the tracks on each side. Put the pivots into the guides and reinstall the glass.

This process is not easy; if you don’t feel confident, you can visit a local dealership and replace the rail/track assembly. The repair procedure is not cheap.
