Thorton Chip Tuning Review
If you want to purchase one of Thornton’s performance chips, then it’s a good thing you’ve decided to read this review.
Performance chips may seem an affordable option to boost your car’s performance, like the ones the Thorton company offers. But is that really so?
Keep reading to hear my thoughts on this device.
What is the Thorton Chip?
The Thorton Chip is an electronic device that you can plug into your vehicle’s OBD2 port to increase the power and performance of the engine.
The chip is made and distributed by the Thorton Chip Tuning company in Columbus, GA. According to them, it is a high-end and powerful system that enables you to change the settings on your car’s engine control unit.
The function of the Thorton chip, according to the manufacturer
The manufacturer of the Thorton chip claims that using this device will provide your car with increased horsepower and torque. But that’s not all.
They also claim that at the same time, it will increase the fuel economy, make your car’s engine run smoother, and reduce harmful gas emissions. Sounds too good to be true, right?
Finally, the manufacturer claims that their Thorton chip will not alter the ECU’s software or cause damage to your car’s engine or electronic system. According to them, it is one of the best, low-cost solutions to getting the maximum performance out of your vehicle.
Types of Thorton Chips
There are three types of Thorton chips, classified in three different stages:
- Stage 1: claimed to provide a 20hp increase and 1 mpg gain.
- Stage 2: claimed to provide a 40hp increase and 3 mpg gain.
- Stage 3: claimed to provide a 60hp increase and 5 mpg gain.
Each performance tuning chip is tailored to fit different customers’ needs. The manufacturer also claims that each chip is preprogrammed to work with your car’s specific make and model.
Is Thornton Chip Tuning Effective? – My Research
Now that I’ve covered all the claims the manufacturer makes about the Thornton chip, it’s time to share my honest Thornton chip tuning review and opinion.
Since I am into car tuning and performance chips, I took it upon myself to research and review the stage 2 Thornton chip. The price indicated from the start that this product might be too good to be true.
I found an interesting review online about a person that installed this device on their 2008 Hyundai Accent, and drove the car for 130 miles, so that the chip could get accustomed to the ECU operation.
According to them, the device did nothing to affect the car’s engine performance, power output, speed, or fuel consumption.
They said it seemed like a marketing scam designed to make you pay for a product that does not benefit your car.
My advice is to save your money and invest in boosting your car’s performance by purchasing a legit performance chip like the HP Tuners MPVI3, and performing part tune-ups and regular maintenance.
What do customers have to say about the Thorton chip?
Just in case you have doubts concerning my claims about this device, I went through and researched several online forums to read about other people’s experiences with this device.
The first place I visited was the reviews tab on the manufacturer’s official page. As I expected, almost all of the reviews were positive. The comments and experiences people shared there make the device seem the best in its class.
So, then I started researching deeper and reading other forums.
Here is a conversation on Reddit, where people claim that the device had no effects on their car whatsoever. Some even tried to return it but have yet to receive a response from the manufacturer.
This forum has mixed opinions and reviews, arguing that the more horsepower a car outputs, the more fuel it requires. So, there is no logic that this device will lower fuel consumption and increase horsepower.
This forum discusses how the manufacturer’s website and review section are scams.
Final Thoughts
The Thorton Chip is different from what the manufacturer promises it would be.
But are other high-end performance chips worth it?
It all depends on your car and engine operation. Naturally aspirated vehicles will see little to no difference in performance from a tuning chip.
On the other hand, cars with turbochargers can yield more power and torque through the use of performance chips. How the engine is supplied with air may be critical in determining whether a performance chip will work on your car.
If you are looking for a legit performance chip, the HP Tuners MPVI3 gets great reviews.
