The Ford Edge is a popular “smart” SUV with many convenient features. Among those features is the automatic liftgate, which opens and closes at a push of a button.

As it turns out, the automatic liftgate feature has more problems than benefits for owners.

Let’s look at the most frequent Ford Edge liftgate problems and what you can do to diagnose and fix them.

Ford Edge Liftgate Problems

According to many owners, the Ford Edge has several liftgate problems:

  • The liftgate refuses to open or close
  • The rear gate trunk module is unresponsive
  • The foot-activated liftgate sensor activates randomly

Solutions to Common Ford Edge Liftgate Problems

Below I will give you some things you can do to try and solve common Ford Edge liftgate issues. Some of them you can try yourself, while others require an experienced mechanic to resolve. It all depends on the problem you’re facing.

What to do when the liftgate refuses to open or close

If you’re facing a situation where the liftgate is either open and refuses to close or vice versa, then the first thing you can try is to re-enable the switch from the console settings.

The owner in this video shows how the liftgate refuses to close, besides his attempts to push the button on the remote or inside the cabin repeatedly.

Luckily, he could close the liftgate manually and later found that the problem was due to an unresponsive module built inside the trunk. That is also where you would want to look for the problem yourself.

An unresponsive liftgate may also indicate a problem with a sensor failure which you can easily replace.

If the gate is stuck open, and you have to close it manually, it may also indicate a problem with the built-in motors. Failed motors may also cause the liftgate to fall when opened, causing injury. In this case, the motors may need to be replaced by an experienced mechanic.

What to do if the rear gate trunk module is unresponsive

The rear gate trunk module is responsible for opening and closing the liftgate on command. This module is programmed at the factory, but users have reported frequent problems originating from it.

If the liftgate becomes completely unresponsive, you can diagnose a faulty rear gate trunk module. This means that no matter what buttons you press, it refuses to respond and open or close the trunk.

A quick fix you can try in this situation is to disable the Power liftgate option in the Ford Edge dashboard and re-enable it after five seconds. This will reset the module and may fix the problem.

You can also try and remove the negative terminal on the battery, powering down all the electric circuits in the car for several seconds. You may need to reprogram or replace the module if that doesn’t work.

What to do if the foot-activated liftgate sensor causes problems

Many users have reported Ford Edge liftgate problems associated with the foot-activated sensor on their 2022 model. Namely, the sensor in the newest model had been placed too far back, causing owners to activate it unintentionally.

Unfortunately, you can only solve this problem by deactivating the foot-activated sensor at your local dealer, which is what owners did after suffering an unintentional injury. It is simply an engineering fault directly from Ford.
